Question:
What basic SEO techniques can I employ to get a higher PageRank?
Answer:
Giving SEO techniques a quick google search will give you enough results to keep you reading for years. Some companies even employ full time SEOs (Search Engine Optimizers) or hire consulting services to manage the SEO for their websites. This is because everyone is coveting that number one spot on the SERP (Search Engine Results Pages) to bring in as much natural traffic as possible.
From the myriad of SEO techniques that there are, here are a few basic techniques that you can employ:
*Page Title:
- place important keywords in your title
- have different titles for each page
- keep titles short, this places higher importance on each word
*Keyword and description meta tags:
-keep keyword frequency to a natural, readable level to avoid spammish presentation
-use html meta tags to emphasize the importance of certain words
*Body text:
- keep your site easy to read in a natural writing style
- keep content useful and relevant
- keep keyword frequency at a natural level, so it reads naturally, and will not appear as spam to spiders
*Regular content:
- keep content updated regularly
- avoid copying content from other sites as this could result in penalization
- add content regularly rather than a lot in one go, spiders might view this as spamming
-link your site to other sites
-have other sites link to yours
*Usability:
- keep interface as simple as possible
- the simpler the interface the better the navigational experience for the user will be
*Use Tools:
- download and install tools from the search engine you would like to rank high up on, on your webpage
*Avoid black hat optimization techniques:
- avoid spamdexing
- avoid linkfarming
- keyword stuffing
- cloaking
- this could result in penalization from the search engine
These basic SEO techniques can be employed to achieve a higher PageRank to increase the natural traffic to your site.

I think you failed to answer the question pertaining to PageRank. The only answer here really is, “Links”. Internal and External, how you go about that is a whole other story. A website with good content that is easy to find is more likely to be linked to, resulting in a better PageRank, but there really are few guarantees when it comes to increasing page rank.
The last paragraph really should read: “These basic SEO techniques can be employed to achieve a higher SERP ranking to increase the natural traffic to your site.”
Another notible point is that most search engine penalise link swapping so it’s NB to note that although link building is exceptionally NB, link swapping is penalisable….also bear in mind that links from lower ranked sites than yours are also undesirable…
@ Ian, I would argue 100% that most search engines penalise link swapping. That really couldn’t be further from the truth. Search engines penalise poor linking. Linking back to a link farm would suggest that your site is of poor quality. However, I honestly don’t see how a simple link exchange between a local hospital and private practice in that town could ever be harmful. I belive that could actually help.
