Word of the Decade is… Google

“Google” has been named the word of the decade and “Twitter” the word of the year (2009) by The American Dialect Society. This occurred after Bing said that “Twitter” is the most popular word for 2009 and the word “unfriend” meaning to remove someone as a Facebook friend is the word of the year according to the Oxford Dictionary.

The word “google” is in lower-case as it does not refer to the company itself. It is a term for searching the internet no matter which search engine you may use. Some thought that “blog ” would be the word of the decade but “google” won the competition. The word “Tweet” is society’s word of the year but Twitter only started using this word a few months ago. This word was used by almost everyone although unlike “Google”, “Tweet” has not been trademarked.
