According to statistics from Quantcast, social media network, Twitter has not grown as much as expected. The highest number of unique visitors was in July 2009 and since then they have not reached that level again. Web analytics, Compete, showed that Twitters US traffic grew by 1.45% from 22.48 million in November to 22.81 million users in December, which is much lower than the numbers quoted in July. Twitter had a total of 29.2 unique visitors in July and has dropped to 23.6 million visitors, a loss of 24%.
Twitter grew 752% in 2008 and 1300% in February and March. Many celebrities such as Oprah, Ashton Kutcher and CNN assisted Twitter in their increase of users and at one stage Twitter was a threat to Facebook. If the numbers do not increase Twitter may have to be acquired by another company. Reasons for the drop in visitors could be one of the following:
Their growth may not be stalling but rather the statistics are not counting the Twitter users who make use of their applications.
Twitter has a limited appeal as only a few users have something to say on a consistent basis.
Twitter will need to find a way to expand their user base either by changing their image to the public or by changing their public to log on more frequently.
